Elements for a Festive Easter Altar

It’s springtime and that means the Easter holiday is near when egg hunts and chocolate bunnies are a-plenty. This festive holiday marks in the Christian community  the resurrection of Jesus three days after his death by crucifixion. In the pagan community  it celebrates Ostara or Spring Equinox. As spring also symbolizes the death and rebirth cycle, we can all create altars at home to honor this special time of year. 

As with any altar, you want to include the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air. Get creative with what you want to use on your Easter altar to symbolize these four elements. For example, fun, colorful Easter candles can honor the fire element. Add some Easter lilies to your altar and bring in the water element as you pour some into a glass vase to nurture the beautiful flowers. 

There are no rules when you are intuitively creating something divine through your heart. Add a rabbit’s foot or a few to your altar as a fun way to symbolize the Easter theme and also call-in good luck. Let your altar be a form of self-expression, self-love, and a symbol of honoring people, things, seasons, and holidays in just the way you would.  

Here’s some suggestions for elements to consider including on your Easter altar:

Water

Flowers on your altar are always a great way to symbolize the water element. In addition to the Easter Lily, other springtime holiday flowers are Tulips, Easter Cactus, Daisies, and Hyacinth. 

If you want to go a different route, skip the bouquet, and instead fill a small bowl with water and place one floating flower on top. You choose the way your beauty shines through this altar.

Earth

Following the Easter holiday is Earth Day, so think about all the way you can honor the earth element on your altar. Since this is Easter, why not be playful and place a small pot of green grass with a colorful egg in the middle on your altar. Not only will it represent the festive Easter egg hunt, but also the element of earth. 

Fire

A candle is always a go-to for the fire element, but as mentioned above, for Easter the candles can be extra special. Sure, you can absolutely include a 7-day candle adorned with Jesus if that’s what . That’d be perfect for your Easter altar, in fact. However, add a little creativity with lots of color, shapes, and sizes. Maybe a bunny candle and a few eggs. This altar will surely make you and anyone else that sees it smile. 

Air

Burn some lavender, rose, or cherry blossoms incense. The wafting smoke represents the air element on your Easter altar. If you’re not a fan of incense, a feather can also do the trick. Depending on where you are in the country, your springtime Easter altar may include feathers from cardinals, owls, or sparrows. 

Remember to put your heart and intention to every step as you set up your Easter altar. That is the most important touch!
